Last week, Toyota announced some details about the 2016 Toyota Highlander, and drivers are sure to love it! Now in its third generation, the benchmark midsize SUV offers three powertrain options, seating for up to eight passengers, and plenty of fun and convenient features. Keep reading to find out what helps make this midsize SUV continue its pattern of excellence.
The 2016 Toyota Highlander is offered in four trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, and Limited. The LE comes standard with a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 185 horsepower and comes paired with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic. Drivers can also opt for a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque; it also gets the six-speed automatic. All V6 models come equipped with a standard towing package that includes a heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler, 200-watt fan coupling, supplemental transmission oil cooler, and 150-amp alternator that allows up to 5,000 pounds of towing. Lastly, drivers can opt for the Hybrid Synergy Drive with 280 total horsepower.
It can seat up to eight passengers in three rows of seating. The second row offers bench seating for three or captain’s chairs for two passengers. Features are dependent on trim level with the top of the line getting the most extras. The base-level trim, the LE, is still nicely stocked: 18-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, an integrated backup camera, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, USB ports, windshield wiper de-icer, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen with the Toyota Entune audio system. Features available on higher-level trims include fog lights, an eight-way power driver seat, upgraded Entune telematics system with a bigger touchscreen, leather-trimmed seats, heated seats, three-zone automatic climate control, Smart Key with push-button start, and Driver Easy Speak.
