Toyota automakers really outdid themselves this time. The brand’s promotional team released an ad for the 2018 Toyota Camry that is just totally out of this world. The ad isn’t your run-of-the-mill 30-second video with a clever slogan at the end.
The ad in question was created in collaboration with ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi and graphic design company Structural Graphics. The ad appears as a brochure and features a pop-up of the Toyota Camry dashboard. Here’s the kicker: the pop-up features door handles with a built-in LCD heart monitor. When you grasp the handles, the sensors monitor your heart rate. The ad also features other electronics built into the page, including blue LED lights similar to those used in the sedan’s cabin overhead lighting.
Instead of rolling out the ad at an auto show, the brochures will be released to 50,000 subscribers of InStyle magazine. This in itself is a challenge as the ads have to arrive by mail to the subscribers intact. Otherwise, the electronic component is busted by the time it reaches its final destination.
The built-in heart monitor acquires your heart rate by monitoring the pulse from your thumb when you grasp the handle. Don’t expect the quality, though, of an actual commercial heart rate monitor. The whole idea behind the ad is to emulate the sensory experience of driving.
