When you get a flat tire, it’s always a pain. And if you don’t know how to handle it, changing a flat tire can be a daunting task. So we at Toyota Chula Vista want to make sure our San Diego-area customers know just how to take care of this problem, and how we can help if this problem ever rears its ugly head again.

If you happen to be driving when you get a flat, you need to make sure you maintain your control on the vehicle. In the event of a blowout, this can be a difficult task, but the goal is to reduce your speed slowly and safely, getting your vehicle to the side of the road or some other low-traffic area to change a flat tire. From there, locate and remove the spare tire, which should also have a tire iron, scissor jack, and of course, the spare.

Use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts, then finish removing them by hand, securing them someplace so they don’t roll away. From there, put the jack under the frame of your vehicle and begin to lift. Raise the damaged tire enough so you can remove it, then attempt to install the spare. You might need to raise the jack some more, and then pop the spare on the wheel studs, hand-tightening the lug nuts to secure them to the wheel. Then drop the jack and use the tire iron to secure the lugs and complete the installation.

When finished, make sure you come into our Chula Vista, CA Toyota service center. Our expert team of technicians can replace your tire or wheel and provide you with a full-size spare if need be. We can also take a look at your Toyota and make sure no other harm was caused when the flat happened. We’re here for you, so stay safe on the roads. Take care!
